Request Number: A-2024-00032
Request Summary: Public Works and Government Services assumed all the liabilities of the former Federal Crown Corporation know as DEVCO-Cape Breton Development Corporation in 2014. The purpose for reaching out to AECL is to see if any information might still be in your historical data base with respect to an exposure of 137 Cs from a gauge that was used as level indicators in one of its coal chutes located at DEVCO’s Phalen Colliery. I have a document (Memo-Attached) from AECB dated December 16/99 and am looking for any other information that can be shared. What we know is that over a period of 12 years 8 to 10 former employees potentially came in contact or were exposed. Earlier this week a former DEVCO employee submitted a claim for Prostate Cancer as a result of this exposure. We are in the process of submitting as much information to the NS WCB as we can find, anything further information that AECL has would be greatly apppreciated
